I've been one of the many recent victims using Ubuntu 11.04 x64 on my Thinkpad T410 laptop that has experienced random logout without any crash reports at all.

The Problem

It happens most often when browsing the Internet through any browser but it also happens with trivial tasks such as pressing a save button on LibreOffice. At any moment, it seems like Ubuntu logs out and returns the user back to the GDM login screen.

If you were working on anything else during this time, you've probably lost the data (if not for auto-save features).

Bug Reports Exist

Don't fret; I'm sure the developers are aware of the issue because there are two reports at Launchpad's bug database that have significant activity:

There's also a report about Ubuntu 10.10 on a 64-bit architecture with the same issue.

Signs & Symptoms

If you don't have the time to scan through the bug reports listed above, then here's some general signs and symptoms that you may be able to relate to:

  1. User has a laptop.
  2. Operating System is Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal).
  3. Independent of CPU Architecture (x64 or x32).
  4. Most frequently occurs while browsing the Internet.

The Solution

A solution has yet to be found and the founder of the solution shall receive the infinite gratitude of the Ubuntu laptop community because the frustration quickly piles up.
